In 1976, with the release of the Bill Murata-produced Poki Records album, No Kristo, alongside appearances at Kapahulu’s Uptown Yokos, Jerome Koko, Louis “Moon” Kauakahi, Skippy Kamakawiwoʻole, Israel Kamakawiwoʻole, and Sam Gray – collectively, The Mākaha Sons of Niʻihau, introduced Hawai’i to their highly influential, contemporized music style, firmly rooted in the language and traditional performances of their native Hawai’i.
Unlike several contemporaries, who’s Top 40 radio-friendly songs were written in English and performed with contemporary instruments, The Mākaha Sons of Niʻihau celebrated Hawai’i and its language in both arrangements and vocal styling. Their dedication to hana kuʻuna, traditional works, has ignited and inspired generations of performers to embrace the journey.
Though the group has evolved through the ensuing five decades – most notably with the loss of Skippy and the departure of Israel – the core members have shared the stage with both minted members and guest artists in live and recorded performances. With Israel’s 1993 departure for his solo career, the group’s name changed to The Mākaha Sons, but the music stayed true to the group’s core principles.
Among their accolades are some thirty studio and live albums, several Na Hoku Hanohano Awards and Hawaii Music Awards, The Makaha Bash sell-out concerts at the Waikiki Shell, appearances on national television shows, and concert tours and
appearances at prestigious venues and events throughout the nation, including the inaugural activities for former U.S. President Barack Obama.
The Mākaha Sons will celebrate their 50th anniversary on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at Blaisdell Arena, together with some very special guests.
Reserved tickets, priced from $35 to $150*, go on sale Friday, May 8th at Blaisdell Box Office and Ticketmaster. The link to ticket sales: https://www.ticketmaster.com/makaha-sons-50th-anniversary-honolulu-hawaii-07-18-2026/event/0A006491C489B03E
